Umma University began in 1997 (sometimes cited as 1998) as Thika College for Sharia and Islamic Studies, founded by Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sumait under Africa Muslim Agency (now Direct Aid International). It was established to provide Islamic and sharia studies programs, initially offering certificate, diploma, and foundational courses in Islamic studies.
In 2001, the institution was officially registered under Kenya’s Ministry of Education. Over the next few years, it expanded its academic scope: by 2007, the Commission for Higher Education had validated its diploma programs, and the college began collaborating with the International University of Africa (Khartoum) to offer two degree programmes—Bachelor of Arts in Islamic Sharia and Islamic Studies.
A major turning point occurred in 2013, when the institution was granted a Letter of Interim Authority. This authority enabled it to transition more formally toward becoming a university by expanding its programs and operations.
After obtaining interim authority, Umma University broadened its academic offering: in 2015, it established the School of Nursing & Midwifery, enrolling its first Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing cohort. Meanwhile, recognizing the need for more space and facilities, the university embarked on constructing its Kajiado campus around 2018, including academic blocks, student housing, laboratories, and other infrastructure.
On October 18, 2019, Umma University was officially awarded a charter by President Uhuru Kenyatta, which marked its full recognition as a university under Kenyan law, meeting all required standards of the Ministry of Education and the Commission for University Education. With the charter, it received formal symbols of institutional status: the mace, logo, seal, and accreditation reports.
As of 2023, Umma University has grown both in programmes and graduates: there are about 26 academic programmes across six faculties, and by mid-2023 the university had graduated approximately 4,839 students since its establishment. direct-aid.org The student population was roughly 2,291 in 2023, reflecting growth in enrollment and breadth of offerings.
