Dr. Abbas Gullet, Chancellor of Umma University, is an accomplished humanitarian and distinguished leader whose career spans decades of service, management excellence, and institutional transformation. Born in Modogashe in 1959 and raised in Mombasa, he began his journey with the East African Certificate of Education in 1977 and later built a strong academic foundation through advanced management studies. He holds an MBA and a Post Graduate Diploma in Practising Management from INSEAD (1997), and has completed leadership programs at Lancaster University, McGill University, Hitotubashi University, and the Bangalore School of Management. He has also been honored with Doctorates from Egerton University and JKUAT for his contributions to society.
Dr. Gullet’s humanitarian commitment began in high school when he joined the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) as a youth volunteer. He went on to serve the organization for many years, eventually becoming its Secretary-General in 2001. Under his visionary leadership, KRCS was transformed into one of Africa’s most respected humanitarian institutions — financially stable, innovative, and self-sustaining. His initiatives included establishing E-Plus Emergency Medical Services, Boma Hotels, and other enterprises that generated reliable income to support humanitarian efforts across Kenya.
Internationally, he has served within the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), including in senior leadership roles that strengthened humanitarian coordination globally. His work has earned him numerous recognitions, including UN Person of the Year (2007), the North-South Prize (2017), and national honours such as OGW and MBS.
As Chancellor of Umma University, Dr. Gullet continues to inspire through his values of service, integrity, and excellence. His diverse educational background, global experience, and lifelong dedication to community welfare make him a transformative figure in both humanitarian and educational spheres.
Background & Expertise:
Dr. Halima Saado Abdillahi holds a PhD in Ethnobotany.
She has an extensive research record, including studies on climate change adaptation, flood forecasting and risk management, natural products and ethnobotany, public health, and community resilience.
Leadership Role:
As Vice-Chancellor of Umma University, she heads the University Management Board.
Under her leadership the university continues to expand — for example, launching a major 10-storey complex (the Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sumait Complex in Kajiado) to accommodate more students and support expansion of programmes including Health Sciences, Engineering, Technology, Islamic Studies, Business, Education, and Nursing.

Dr. Halima represents a commitment to integrating quality higher education with strong moral and Islamic values, consistent with Umma University’s mission to produce “holistic graduates of high value and integrity.”
Her background in research, especially on environmental risks and community resilience, aligns with the university’s ambition to contribute broadly to societal development, ethical leadership, and sustainable progress in Kenya and beyond.

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.
These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.
Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.
We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).
