Dr. Abdulrahman Al Sumait, a renowned Kuwaiti physician and humanitarian, played a pivotal role in the establishment of Umma University in Kajiado, Kenya. As the founder and driving force behind the institution, Dr. Al Sumait envisioned creating a center of higher learning that would serve the educational needs of Kenya and the broader East African region while maintaining strong Islamic values and academic excellence.
Dr. Al Sumait (1947-2013) dedicated over three decades of his life to humanitarian work in Africa. A qualified physician who graduated from the University of Baghdad, he chose to channel his medical expertise and philanthropic vision toward improving education and healthcare across the African continent. His work through Direct Aid (formerly Africa Muslims Agency) touched millions of lives through education, healthcare, and social development projects.
Under Dr. Al Sumait’s leadership and through his organization Direct Aid, Umma University was established in 2013 as a fully chartered private university by the Government of Kenya. The university represents one of his most significant educational legacies, designed to provide quality higher education that is both accessible and aligned with the developmental needs of Kenya and the region.
