Established in 1997, Umma University stands as Kenya’s pioneering Islamic institution of higher education. Initially recognized as Thika College for Sharia and Islamic Studies, it was established by Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sumait, a Kuwaiti medical professional.
In 2007, it earned accreditation from the Commission for Higher Education, enabling it to offer diploma programs in Islamic Sharia and Studies. Subsequently,
Umma University formed a partnership with the International University of Africa to extend its offerings to bachelor’s degree programs. In 2013, the university received a Letter of Interim Authority.
In 2019, it was officially chartered by President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, marking its transformation into Umma University. Diverse academic pursuits characterize Umma University’s curriculum, including The School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Sharia and Islamic Studies, School of Law and Shari’a, School of Business and Technology and the School of Education and Social Sciences. Umma University boasts a vast alumni network of successful graduates.
As part of its commitment to academic excellence, the university continually explores opportunities to introduce additional postgraduate and undergraduate programs in the foreseeable future.
